My boyfriend died 9yrs ago, I was told what he died of but I may have been given the wrong information, can I find out what he really died with

His doctor at the time would have that information, but 9 years ago is a long time in medical records and I don't think he would part with that information. If there was an autopsy done, then I don't think you could get that information either.

What good is it to know now, so late ?

The death certificate should state the reason for death

The death certificate will only show the specifics of what he died from if you are the next of kin. If you are not than that part is blacked out. Anyone can get a death certificate about anyone but not the specifics if you are not next of kin.
