I don't know what to do about my Haunted House!
I have recently started renting a house with my best friend and we kept hearing doors closing, gates squeaking and it always sounded like people were walking around down stairs. We dismissed it fairly early. Then one day we had a scare, someone had been in our house eating our food (it was left- half eaten on a plate but the kitchen was fully clean) so we checked the doors and windows and they were all locked . We were very worried that someone had broken into our house so we went and told our real estate agents what happened so we could get all the locks changed and they started laughing at us. We didn't know why? When applying for this house the agent said they've had a lot of trouble trying to find tenants. Then a few days later the locks were changed, then some new local friends of ours came to visit and before they even stepped inside they said "oh know, not this house, i've known other people who have lived here at various times and they all say it is haunted" and they had heard the same things as us, but some strange things had been moving around. So a fewdays later we started to notice all the weird things happening.
*I walked down the hall and into the bathroom, and when I came out the cupboard door in the hallway was fully open- there is no way it could have opened on its own and with out it squeaking - my friend wasn't home at this time. *We had all gone to bed and I woke up in the morning, sleeping in a ditch in my new bed. I felt underneath and not one but two of the posture slats were missing. I thought 'oh great my new bed has broken' but I found the two slats laying in perfect condition on the floor. My best friends partner is a bed specialist and said there is no possible way they could have come out without breaking themselves or the clips that hold them together, which were also intact. I've never slept walked before and wouldn't know how to remove them if I tried. *I recenlty rescued a budgie and is my new pet and for no reason it starts freaking out and throwing itself up against the sides of the cage like its trying to get away from something. It's a happy bird, that's why this is so strange, and I know animals can supposedly see spirits. *Then one day we went to work and when we came home we noticed the manhole in the roof was open. We shrugged it off and closed it- which was very heavy. Then the next day it was open again. So we got up in the roof to check that we didn't have a squater living up there and eating our food. But it was completely empty, not even any holes where someone could be entering from outside.

And that's it so far but these things we have thought over and over and cannot be explained. My friends are just as freaked out and would never be playing tricks on me like that.

Though I honestly think someone human was in our house eating our food that time, the rest I'm not so sure about. (As I've never heard of a ghost eating food!)

So I'm asking... what can I do? I can get any info on the house as I'm only renting and am not allowed that sort of information. But also would love to contact it, so I at least know its name! I'm not scared of it and love the house so I'm not planning on moving but I would rather live in peace with it, rather than worrying about it hurting me!

The idea of offering food to spirits, such as deceased ancestors, is common in many cultures, e.g. Native American, West African, Mestizo Latino. And it was the custom across Europe to leave food at crossroads for the fairies. (Compare the milk and cookies we leave for Santa). But a poltergeist-like spirit that breaks into your cupboards and refrigerator? That puts me in mind of the green blob in Ghostbusters! ;) It is very unusual.

My first thought would be that this is a human, either a street person or perhaps a friend or maybe the landlord playing a prank. If you do everything you can to rule that out (you could try the old James Bond trick of sticking a hair across the door, to see if anyone opens it while you are gone--a spot of chapstick on the door and the jamb will keep it in place), and if you are certain there is no other way into the attic space, then maybe it is a spirit.

I like your attitude! Nice that you want to make friends with it, rather than banish it. As to how, well, use your imagination. Just simply holding the intention of wanting to know it and learn its name will often do the trick. I find that I can often just think about what I want to do, and then just quietly let it manifest itself over a few weeks. Since it seems to like food, that would be the obvious way to get in touch. Try leaving it a treat now and then and see what happens. If it takes the treat, leave it a small one with a bell and a note: "Ring the bell if you want more." I'm just throwing out ideas. But perhaps you could draw it to you the same way you would a wild animal you wanted to tame. Feed it treats, get a little closer each time.

Your better than me because I would've ran out that house so fast and never looked back.

Be careful though because recently where I live a lady went though the same thing as you. Someone was eating her food and her and her husband found that odd. I mean food wa just disappering. Then other things started disappering. Like he laptop, jewlery, towels, toothbrush, etc. Cops was called and only a report was taken because there was no sign of false entry. This happen 4 times. Fast forward to the end, she found up a guy was living in her attic for over a week. He was arrested but it still a little creepy.

It comes back to your intention. I just recently answered a question about ouija boards on the "magic" category of this site. You can check out what I said about creating sacred space. As I said in that post, I recommend that for any spiritual work.

I think I might have an idea of what's living on your house at the moment. Have you ever heard of faeries or elves, I know it may sound stupid or even childish to consider it, but it turns out that those things happening in your house sound like a game, the boards under the bed the open windows, the half-eaten food. They're just having fun from my point of view, and it's anoying you.
You see I spent my summer vacations at my grandparents, and similar things started happening to me, like windows being open on the second floor (my grandma and grandpa no longer go to the second floor because their knees hurt too much when they climb the stairs so), at night (and believe me this one actually scared the crap out of me), someone changed my bed's position, I went to sleep facing the window and woke up facing the wall, and I'm a light sleeper. So I told my grandma and she just laught it out and said, quot '' never mind them honey they're just having, I'ts only two or three times a year they receive visitors, it's only because yoour a novelty, give it a week or two and they'll stop''.
So as you see if they ARE indeed elves or faeries don't pay them much attention and they will stop, eventually.

I hope everything gets better and that you get to stay in that house. Bye.

Have you ever seen the show "Ghost Hunters" on the SciFi Channel? They use regular things like tape recorders and video cameras to catch some very interesting things going on in reportedly haunted locations. Of course, if it happens to be a person sneaking in and out, you should be able to catch that as well - especially if you make sure the camera or tape recorder is fairly well hidden in a "hot spot".

I actually have a tape recorder small enough to fit in a pocket that we purchased when my son was having problems with an abusive little girl next door. When the bus driver was about to throw both my son and this girl off the bus if something didn't change, it allowed my son to prove his innocence.

We also purchased a camcorder for a family vacation a few years ago, and between the camcorder and the tape recorder, my daughter was able to prove her own innocence to my husband, who was accusing her of getting into our food cupboard in the middle of the night. The tape recorder in her room caught the sound of her snoring at the same time as the video camera caught the cat pulling open the pantry door - and then the cat bolting when my husband went down to investigate. He said something aloud that was caught on both the camcorder and the tape recorder at the same time, and since the snoring continued on uninterrupted, there was no doubt about who was raiding the pantry in the middle of the night.

Using such tools may allow you to confirm if there is a human element to your "haunting" - or if you truly have unexplained phenomena that a paranormal society like TAPS might be interested in investigating for you. Most do so at no cost to you.

Your house isn't haunted humans are the culprits, put up some security cameras and prosecute them.
