When can I get a new puppy?
    [F]

Hello, about 6 months ago I lost my 4 month Corgi mix to Parvo.I have never been threw Parvo before,I tried soooo hard to survive him with information I found on the internet. My sweet Brody fought with all his little heart for 4 days before I lost him.On his way" down" he had vomited all over our home and yard. I bleached everything I knew how in my home, I do not know how to bleach my carpet, it is white but, I can't afford a carpet shampooer, can some one help p me there?
My families life has not been the same since we have lost him.The main reason we got him is because after I had my first son I was told we can not have any more children, so we decided a puppy is the next best thing to a baby, we brought him into our family as our baby, he was my sons best friend and little brother ,and he was my baby.I never expected I would have to berry one of my babies at the age of 23.My son is starting to get threw it, I am not that far yet.
I know I can't ever replace my Brody Bear because he was the only one in the world like him, but we need that special love in our family. I want to get a Basset Hound puppy but I can not bare to go threw Parvo ever again. I am going to prevent it in any way possible, I want to take it to extreme that it will never happen to my family again.
If any one can help me with my questions of: is it to early to get another puppy? How can I bleach my carpet?Does the puppy shots prevent parvo 100%?How long should I wait to get another one if it is still early, after I bleach my carpet? Is there anything els I can do to make sure all the Parvo is gone? I dearly appreciate any ones advise.
    Thanks for your time,

Hi there. I'm sorry to hear about losing your Brody to Parvo. Even when caught early with aggressive treatment at a vet, it can still claim lives. :(

Parvo can live a long time in the environment - it is insanely hardy. It can live in the soil for years, and bleach is really the only thing that can kill it.
Even though you have treated all you can, I would honestly wait for 6 months before considering another puppy, and it should have at least two of its puppy series shots for Parvo before you bring him home. It would probably be ideal to not bring the puppy home until he has had his full series (3 sets). Black and Tan puppies are more susceptible to the virus, and basset hounds do fall into that colour category.. I would bleach the carpets, and all areas the puppy may have come into contact with, several times over six months to play it safe.
The puppy shots do not prevent parvo 100%. I have seen dogs that have been vaccinated all their lives come down with it. It's always a risk.

Make sure you are using a 1:10 bleach solution, and it needs to be pretty heavily treated. Just spraying the area with the solution won't do. The risk is everywhere, carpet, furniture, the grass outside, etc.
