    Pond pump tripping electric
    Hi

We have 2 submersible pumps upright type with float switch
However when we plug them in within 5 or so minutes it trips the electric consumer unit.
They were working OK before and not a year old having been off all winter
They have been cleaned where accesible does anyone have any ideas as to why they should trip?
    Thanks Sue

The worst thing for a pump motor is to sit. Moisture may seep in dry sealing points, may not need much, and the inside becomes a ground fault, tripping a RCD (Residual Current Device, GFI in the USA).

Running helps dry out the coils and keep seals sealed.

You may try, under very careful attention to hazards, try the motor from a standard breaker, and not use a RCD. Not sure if you have any, as most of your circuits are RCD protected, I think.

If it is worth repairing, depending on cost of motor compared to repair charges, it may be repairable. If this is something cheap to replace, better to start fresh with a new motor/unit.
