So, maybe I just got ripped off or just stupid
    Howdy all,
Just joined cause well... I have no idea what I am doing.
So I bought a used fan off craigslist cause it was cheap. The family was very nice, told me the fan worked (so I am assuming it does... ) I have wired up everything that I need to, but when I flip the switch, the motor makes a very very quite sound (like it is on very low power... ) but the fan blades do not spin. Is this a common thing? Does the fan not work... or do I need to explain more.
    Thanks for helping

You don't , by chance, have it hooked up to a dimmer switch - do you? Fans require a special dimmer and I've seen this mistake made more than once...

Fans can't use a dimmer at all. And you should always test a fan without any control unless the control is included.
