I hope this is the right place to post my question and someone will be able to help me.

I own a General Electric AC/DC multi-band, AM, FM/AFC, PS HI/AIR, PS LO, SW and MB, model number P4960A portable radio. The dial cord frayed where wrapped around the tuning shaft and broke. The cord routing appears to be simple but I do not know which direction the cord should route around the pulleys. There are 5 pulleys; 3 are single groove, (1 of which sits 3/8" higher than the other 2), 1 is double groove and 1 is a step down, double groove, which is the closest to the tuning shaft and is 90 degrees located to the other pulleys. The large cord wheel is single groove, 2 1/2"in diameter with 2 retainer tabs. The loop at one end of the cord was on 1 tab and the other end loop was with a small spring attached to the other tab. I guess I should rotate the cord wheel counter-clockwise to position the indicator bar at the bottom of the scales, then route a new cord around the pulleys and attached the indicator bar at the bottom. I plan on using Button/Carpet cotton thread, approximately 50# test strength, unless you would suggest some other cord material, i.e. fly line, dental floss, etc. that would be better.

Don't bother trying substitutes. For the cord. Won't work:

Do a search for dial cord. $1.00/ft

Tie a slip knot in the fixed end. Re-string and then you can place the springed end on last.

The springs make the dial have tension and it prevents the cord from breaking.

Usually the driving knob (tuning) has a few wraps of cord around it.

The pointer can be set after it is strung and secured by a dab of glue.

I think you need to take the plate off which is attached to the bottom. The pointer will just hang over the edge. Part of the pointer rides along the dial.

I can't make out all of the stringing posts from the picture.

Wait till you get the cord and post back.

Meanwhile you can try a test wind with some carpet thread, but mind you it won't work
