Alty does your offer still stand?
Hi this Aunt Swee I am asking if you would still be willing to help me find a mature dog to round out my family?

I might be a day or two in answering as my husband hogs the computer during the day. Plus I get busy taking care of others. Got a community garden to plant this week but will try to check in at night, if not to tried LOL.;)

Hi AuntSwee, I'd be happy to help you find a dachshund.

I will need you to tell me where you live, the distance you're willing to travel, etc. etc.

Do you have an age preference, male or female, color, long haired, short haired, mini or not?

I look forward to your reply, then I'll start a search. :)

I live in white city, Oregon, USA. I don't drive so rely on friends to drive me around. I think I would prefer a male who is fixed and good with children as I have them around a lot. If you don't think this breed would be good with children, could you recommend a breed that would, that is small please.:)

As I have read some of the threads here I am thinking a doxie might not be a good fit after all. I have children over almost daily and from what I have been reading doxies are not good with people who do not belong to the household.Plus I went to a site about doxies and it said that they are not good with children who they did not grow up with. So any thing you come up with I am willing to look at, my cockapoo is wonderful with children, when they come over she sings for them. So I am thinking I need a dog who LOVES children as much as I do.

Are you after a small dog AuntSwee or would you take any size/breed?

Laboradors and probably the sweetest dogs in the world with children.

Doxies are notoriously bad with children, it's part of their breeding. Who would think that such a small dog could have so much attitude? ;)

Labs are great with kids, but not small, that's for sure. A mixed breed is probably your best bet.

I'll do a search, see what I can find in your area and then send you the info. :)

Give me a few days, a lot going on right now.

If I don't post by next Monday remind me, I'm really forgetful. Where am I? Oh, you. ;)

I have to disagree. I have owned several doxies who are great with kids. My one I have currently loves kids! It is not part of theiR breeding to be bad with kids. Remember temperament is a bred in or taught trait. No dog starts being mean to dogs, people, kids, ca

SORRY Didn't GET TO FINISH LOL

Cats, etc. Puppies can be taught to be great dogs with kids they just need the socialization around kids. Some adult dogs are harder to train but it is possible.

True, but I do find that it depends on whether they are brought up with kids, not added to the mix when kids are already present, much like German Shepherds.

I do believe that any dog can adapt to a home with children, but the OP wants an older dog, so a doxie probably isn't the best fit, unless of course that doxie has been raised with children present.

My parents had a doxie when I was born, she did not do well when I came along.

German shepherd are a very tolerant breed and train easily, at least all the ones I have worked with are and do. You just have to stimulate their mind and keep them busy!
But if she looking to adopt a dog for the kids I would suggest taking the kids with her to look at the dogs and interact with them. You can never be sure of a dogs history when they are at a shelter, so you will never really know if they are brought up with kids So bring the kids to see which dog shows the interest in them and plays more. Most of the time the dogs pick the people!

True, but from what she wrote they aren't her kids, just kids that are over at her house a lot and will interact with the dog.

One great feature the shelter in Edmonton has is a grading system for the dogs that are admitted. They will list whether the dog is suitable for children and if so, what age group. They also list the temperament of the dog, the energy level and what a potential owner needs to know before considering that specific dog. It's great, helps people make an informed decision.

I love German shepherds, but I have to say I've had bad luck with them. I've never owned one, but all three times I've ever been bitten it was by a German Shepherd.

Shaz just lost one of her bunnies to a German Shepherd. It came into her yard and killed her bunny, almost got both of them.

I love the breed but I have to say that I am cautious around them.

Oh that's great that the shelter does that. I had adpoted a husky from a shelter who not to my knowledge was men aggressive and didn't like to have its collar grabbed. I had him one night and he bit me, cause I went to put a leash on to take him outside to go potty. I had to get two stitches!
I agree shepherds are not a breed for everyone because they are a one family dog and need GOOD training. But however I have been bitten but other breeds and I never hold it against the breed, just the dog!

So true. I still love German shepherds, but I don't think I'd ever own one and I have to admit, I am weary around them, too many bad incidents.

Sorry I haven't been around for awhile. I had some emergencies come up. I hate it when life happens. A friend of mine wants me to get more help with my seizures. I did great having Buddy around poor little Annie has been having major health problems of her own. She is all better now. The vet said I was a great mommy as her health for being 14 is really good. Foxtails and yeast infections are minor compared to an over weight and spoiled dog. I could not believe how many people don't realize that they are suppose to be the Alpha not the dog. There were some many dogs at the vet office that were younger than Annie and in very bad shape because their owners just loved them too much. Sorry this got so long. I am having a problem with my husband as he doesn't want anymore dogs AT ALL.
