I am still a little confused about the necessity of GFCI outlets in Basements and Garages concerning appliances "mainly the sump pump". All of the AMHD regular contributors seem to say that GFCI outlets are not required for appliances such as sump pumps and freezers however the 2008 code version seems to suggest different. I even have in front of me right now the illustrated guide to the '08 NEC book which clearly states that whether a duplex or single receptacle is installed for an appliance, GFCI protection is required per 210.8(A)(2)



This was pulled directly from the 2008 code changes Chapter 2 Part 2 concerning 210.8


Author’s Comment: "The two exceptions permitting receptacles that were not readily accessible and single or duplex receptacles for two appliances within a dedicated space for each appliance to not have GFCI protection for personnel in garages and unfinished basements were deleted. The substantiation in the proposal and the discussion during the panel deliberation indicated that the present generation of GFCI devices do not have the problems of nuisance tripping that plagued earlier devices".

It is basically stating that New GFCI outlets have been deemed superior to past devices and therefore the exceptions allowing non GFCI outlets for appliances such as sump pumps and freezers no longer exist in the latest code book. TK I'm not sure if I'm reading this right but from my research it sounds and looks right. Any help would be appreciated
