I owe a private parking company (AMPCO).
About $1,000. They sent me a letter in the mail saying if I don't pay them now, they will take me to court. I don't have the money until August. How serious do you think they are about this? Not only do I not have the money now, I also am moving in one week, 3 hours away from where I am now. Therefore, if a court date is scheduled and I am unable to appear, will I get a warrant? I'd like to know if it is just safe to blow them off, and pay them when it works for me. Thanks.

It's hard to say how serious someone is when they threaten to go to court, but my guess would be that a parking company has to deal with issues of non-payment quite often and probably has their small claims procedures down pretty well. If the debt is valid and you expect to lose, it is foolish to let it go to court. This will add their court costs to the debt as well as incur some costs yourself (for example, traveling 3 hours to appear in court, probably taking off work in the process). I woould recommend that you contact them, explain your hardship and try to work out a payment agreement with them. Expect them to be difficult to deal with, since running up a $1,000 parking tab is something that obviously already has been an issue for some time. Blowing them off, appears to be what you already have been doing to get it to this point.
