YOu need to check the evaporator and fan to see if the fan is working and if the evap is frozen up. The noise could have been your fan hitting on the ice then afer time, enough ice that he fan will not work. Could be the fan went out and the veap froze up. Verify these first

The evaparator is located in the same are as the fan. Both are located in the back side of the freezer section. Shouldn't be to awful difficult to get to

I have replied elsewhere in this forum, in detail, to RSacks1025 about this.
Also - forgive that this is a question from a couple of months ago. You probably have solved the problem some other way, or given up. This posting may be more for those who come after.

Getting at the evaporator fan is not so easy, and needs some care.

The evaporator and its fan are accessed from the front. Door open, shelves removed.
Also, the panel containing the sensor and the interior lamps is removed, using the instructions for changing the bulbs.

Next, the panel below that. This is a non-trivial operation because of built-up icing and blocked drain, and a "pond" of ice that builds up in the fan cavity, eventually bringing it to a halt. Then the interior temperature near the sensor gets up near room temperature, while the device goes into runaway refrigeration mode, making ever more ice below the evaporator, and the fan. If you are not careful, and comfortable with the presence of wires, connectors, and metal tubes of refrigerant that MUST NOT be damaged, do not do this!

After removing screws, do not remove the panel by pulling because of significant damage to seals and parts when frozen. Particularly, there is a heater panel with a loop at the bottom, poking down into the drain hole. It is likely to be frozen solid, trapping the heater. Allow it all to melt. In fact, it may be sufficient to just let it all melt without further intervention. If you do go as far as this by yourself, remember to wipe everywhere you have touched with methylated alcohol or antibacterial agent before reassembly. This is absolutely not the place you want anything growing!

I have "improved" the build on my fridge in these areas. I may post further on it in the future.
