Older female cockapoo digging?
My little cockapoo dog is 14, she has just started "digging" everywhere she is going to lay down at. She has never done this before. My question is why now?

You are lucky, mine have all done thaat since puppies, have to have the leather couch covered in blankets! Such a waste! The only thing I can think of is just tell her 'no' when she does it. Get her to lay down and give her a treat or a toy to show she is good for just laying down and not digging. I honestly have no idea what would cause this in such and old dog :confused: |

Is it possiable that she is going through a second childhood. She has Never liked toys and now plays with them, she never chewed as a pup and now, anything that is within reach gets chewed,(cords and such). She is deaf so telling her no doesn't work. Pointing does't work either she just turns her back to me and does her own thing. I am wondering if this is caused by her not being able to hear anymore? I have never had a dog live this long before, so am at a loss as what to do with her. All the dogs we had growing up died from too much "love", cancer,diabetes, and such from too much human food, at very young ages. Her back legs are showing signs of weakness, and she can't jump anymore, my daughter wants me to put her down, I just can't do that yet, she still eats and drinks fine, the vet said she is very healthy for her age. I guess my question is how long do the smaller breeds live. I have always had big dogs. |

I definitely wouldn't be listening to your daughter!! Have you taken her to the vet? It could be arthritis in her hind legs and there are many effective treatments and pain relief for it. They can go through a second childhood! My mom has a poodle that is doing just that, she never played with toys and all of a sudden she loves them! It is hard to say with a mixed breed how long they live. Generally the smaller the dog the longer the life span (in most cases) Poodles average around 12-16 years. Cocker spaniels average a bit less. |

Thank you for your answers. Yes I have taken her to the vet. He said as long as she doesn't seem to be in pain to try a child's buffered asprin once in awhile when the weather turns. She already has weak kidney's so we are trying not to give her too much in the pain med department. She still "sings" when the kids come over so she is very active for her age. |

That's good to hear :) I would never put a dog to sleep unless they were in obvious uncurable pain. |

I just love this forum. I thank everyone who has answered my questions. At last there is a place where the only dumb question is the one not asked. Thank you for agreeing that my little Annie Oakly is still healthy and able so what if she can't hear anymore, she still gives kisses, and is very glad to see me in the morning. |

I can not say why your dog started digging at a late age but I can tell you one thing that stopped my dog from digging. I was told to take some of my dogs poop and put it where she was digging. I had to do it all over the yard lol but after a while she got the hint and stopped. Good luck. :)
