Chihuahua not sleeping through the night
We rescued a Chihuahua this past November. She has been fine with sleeping up until a week ago. Nothing has changed ( still sleeps in her crate in our room) but she now wakes up EVERY night around 1am and just starts whining. She doesn't ever have to go to the bathroom ( that's the first thing we thought of) and will only stop crying if we let her up on the bed to cuddle/sleep with us.
Her crying gets so bad that not only can we ( humans) not sleep, but it aggrivates our other dog ( who sleeps in his crate next to her). We do not want her to be sleeping in our bed with us for 2 reasons. 1) if we let her sleep in it, we have to let the other dog sleep with us too ( it's only fair) & 2) we want to start a family soon and, well, a child will take more of a priority of sleeping in the bed than a dog. Also, when we let them sleep with us, we don't get a good night sleep, as we are sleeping all contorted. So, basically we are in a lose-lose situation :( We have tried telling her to be quiet but that hasn't worked. We tried to just ignore her, but she keeps crying... for hours ( which means no sleep) . She is a real cuddle bug ( as soon as we sit down opn the couch, she just jumps right up and burrows under our blanket and stays there until we move) and we thought that she may have just become really attached to us and is having a kind of separation anxiety Please help with any suggestions! |

Put plenty of toys in the crate and a snuggly blanket. Leave a radio on low so she has some background noise and doesn't hear you in the other room. I would try putting her in another room, but her separation anxiety is bad. If I so much as walk into another room, she starts to bark ( since she can't see me) and does this even though she is fully able to follow me/wlak to where I am.

Mine had exactly the same problem, while mine aren't rescue cases and somebody will probably come on here and contradict me. All mine have been trained out of this behaviour by strong will by me (And a lot of angry words) Try leaving the room for a very short period, even if it is only 10 seconds and is she barks in that time scold her. If you can get to a point where she can go that 10 seconds without barking, praise her and reward her. Make the time you are apart from her longer and longer. It is a slow process but it can be fixed. |

Have you tried letting her sleep with your other dog? (Only if other dog is willing). My daughter did the with her dachshund and bull terrier. The really small short haired dogs need lots of warmth and snuggles, they get cold so easy. Also you can try a wind up clock under a stuffed toy. She may just need to know that she isn't alone in the dark. I have a old dog who is scared of the dark I leave night lights on for her, and she is fine. I hope you get some sleep soon. |

What kind of schedule can I expect with a puppy coming home that is about 8 weeks old. Do I put her in crate at 8 at 9 at 10 before we go to bed? Will she wake up at 1 am 2 am or sleep until 6 or so. What will it be like during the day? WHAT AM I IN FOR? Lol
