A IED (improvised explosive device) is a handmade explosive built out of almost anything the engineer working on the IED can get his hands on this can range from: home-made explosives, collected explosives, shrapnel and also biochemical weaponry (harmful chemicals) used in the explosive packages named (IED).

Normally a IED consists of five things which are:
A detonator or as a nickname (dead mans switch).
A fuse to make bomb ignite.
A power source for bomb and ignition on the dead mans switch.
And finally a container to conceal bombs contents/package.

Normally there are also three types/classification of IED'S which are:
    A package IED.
    A vehicle born IED. (VBIED'S)
    And suicide bombs/IED'S

Many of these methods have killed several people in war and conflicts, on averadge every bomb disposal expert in Afghanistan defuses over 800 bombs before they are killed by a IED whuch are still a rising threat in Afghanistan and other conflict zones.

I hope this has answered your question.
