    Something to keep kids off the wall
    What's the name of a plant apart from roses that hs thorns on and where can I buy them cheers

    Bromeliads –
    Many have thorns e.g. Ananas spp. Cryptanthus spp. Dyckia spp. etc.
    Palms –
    e.g. Phoenix roebelenii, Pigafetta filaris, Daemonorops mollis, Calamus australias, Aiphanes caryotifolia, etc.
    Cycads –
    Many cycads have sharp pointed leaflets e.g.. Cycas revoluta, Dioon edule, Encephalartos spp. etc.
    Cactus –
    An obvious choice for spiky plants e.g.. Cerus spp. Lemaireocereus thurberi, Echinopsis multiplex, Echinocactus spp. Pereskia aculeata, etc.
    Succulents -
    Many of these have thorns and spines e.g.. Euphorbia milii, Aloe spp. Agave spp.
    Climbers –
    Bougainvillea spp, Smilax spp. Quisqualis indica, etc.
    Other Shrubs –
    Grevillea acanthifolia, Carissa grandiflora, Polyscias guilfoylei, Ilex spp. Rosa (cultivars), Berberis spp. Pyracantha spp. Lycium ferocissimum, Isopogon spp. Acacia spinesvens, etc.
    Other Sharp Foliage Plants -
    Kniphofia uvaria, Cymbopogon citratus, Protoasparagus spp. etc

    Whose kids, yours or the neighbors? I ask only because if you create a attractive nuisance that injures a kid you could be liable. Barberry is thorny.

    What about blackberry or raspberry - they are both very thorny - and not terribly hard to grow (but kind of hard to control!)

    Barberry (Berberis ssp.) is a good choice. When I was a kid, I used to cut through a neighbor's yard to go to a friends. He planted barberry bushes in my path, and that was the end of that shortcut. Berberis 'Rosy Glow' has a nice mottled red/pink leaf in the new growth and will probably get about 6' tall. Try Berberis 'Crimson Pygmy' if you don't want it to get to big. When they get about as big as you want them to be, start cutting them back by about 1/3 each year to keep them young, as the new growth has the best color. Don't use hedge trimmers, but prune them by cutting whole branches so they keep a natural shape.
