Hi There

I have been lucky enough (maybe) to find a box containing a rather ugly (in my humble opinion) ring. The ring looks like silver (thick band) with a opal in the middle surrounded by 14 diamonds. I can't see any hallmarks other than numbers; 625 (could be 825/925 not sure). Its quite large.
anywhoo... just wondering do you think a jeweler would laugh at me for getting it valued!

If it is not marked, that doesn't matter. However, it's most likely 925 and that means it is sterling silver. If it is 925 that means the diamonds might just be CZ's, or in other words, not diamonds. I advise doing a search on eBay to find a similar item. Search on Sterling Ring Opal and see what comes up. I'm sure many many items to sort through. But that might help you get an idea of 'value'. I recently purchased a pendant with the 625 hallmark. I went to several sites that stated it was a gold marking for 15 kt (I know that sounds weird). But prior to 1932, the British used the 625 which is .625 percent gold which is the equivalent to 15 kt. Please take it to a Jeweler that you trust to test it. Good luck!

No. Take it to a local jeweler and they can tell you right off if they are diamonds. They see all kinds of things. I collect costume jewelry and have taken pieces in to test for gold, diamonds, and other gem stones. Also, the fact that the ring is sterling DOES NOT automatically mean they are not diamonds. Most likely they are not, however there are some antique diamond rings made of silver. It is rare. But you should check. Also, very recently with gold prices being what they are, some jewelers are setting diamonds in sterling. It is less expensive and more abundant. You really should ask a jeweler. You'll drive yourself crazy if you don't. That is, if you're like me.

I agree, take it to a jeweler. I had a vintage ring that was my mothers and found out what I thought was 3 diamonds were white sapphires.
