Moving permanently, can I put spouse's SSN field blank?
    Dear Experts,

I got married in 2008. My wife is a Canadian resident and we are moving to Canada permanently and do not have any intention to get an SSN or ITIN for her. As I am no longer residing in the US, I will be sending my tax return by mail (as it is not an option to do E-File by TT-Online). I have filed an extension due to my current situation.

Questions: What can I put on the SSN field for my wife? Can I leave it blank?

    Thanks,
    Jaden

    Jaden:

If you are filing jointly with your wife, you MUST submit Form W-7 with the tax return to apply for an ITIN for her,

If you are filing Married Filing Separately, put your wife's name on the tax return with the letters NRA (for non-resident alien) where her SSN would go. The IRS will accept such a return if it is mailed.

BTW, you CAN claim your wife's personal exemption on your return if she is not filing a U.S. tax return.
