    Can electrical grade PVC be used for direct venting?
    Hi,

    I need to use 3 inch PVC, CPVC or ABS for a direct vent water heater. My local supplier didn't happen to have any standard PVC or ABS in that size available when I stopped by but did have the gray electrical grade PVC available. I figure that should work fine but before I waste my time and money I thought I should check. My understanding is that the difference is that electrical grade as UV protection but otherwise is the same - is this correct?

    It will work just fine other then a bit pricey

    I would suggest going to a plumbing supplier, or shop and just buy some pvc from them. Will most likely save you some money. Will also make for a more professional job.

    Thanks, I found some ABS elsewhere and went that way; I was just curious. It did cost a little more indirectly though since the heater comes with an intake filter which is PVC so I had to use a clamp join between the ABS and PVC.

    The clamp joint is a good idea here anyway. Nice to be able to quickly unhook intake, or exhaust for trouble shooting purposes in the future. Good job.
