Where can I publish and sell my photos?
Any good RELIABLE site that gets high traffic would be amazing, but any sites are appreciated! Thanks!

It depends on the type of photos you have. For stock photos, there are 2 main ways to go: 1) Micro stock - pays very little per image but you get high volume, or 2) Traditional stock - pays a lot per image but you have very few sales. One of the more popular micro stock sites is iStockPhoto.com. For regular stock, the biggest site is Getty Images. In both cases the site makes a significant percentage (60%-80%) of your sales for providing the service. As a rule it's much harder to have your images accepted at a traditional stock site than at a micro-stock site. Traditional stock sales are also very slow in reporting and paying for usage - I'm still waiting for payment from Getty for images that were used in May 2008, with the usage reported in October 2008.

If your photos are art photos, the most common way is to setup your own website and draw users to your photos. You can use a service like Smugmug to host and sell your photos. They have a free trial, and you can use this code: Rj4IWoed1h9YM for a $5 discount on your subscription fee. You pay an annual fee, and a small percentage of your sales (generally 10%-20%) to the site for providing the service, processing the payment, delivering the file or print to the customer.

There are several out there that are decent. Some are outright ugly and have colons all over the screen.

Some things to consider if wanting to sell photos. Pick a site that:

    - has automatic watermarking
    - has automatic right click protection
    - handles all the sales (credit cards, etc) for you and then forwards you the profit
    - has customizable features
    - has appealing backgrounds for the novice
    - has the ability to easily put banners and drop down menus
    - has good technical support
    - professionals use
    - is menu driven
    - allows people to leave comments
    - allows you to create non-photo content like blogs and guest books
    - is appealing to the eye
    - allows users to choose the layout they prefer
    - allows password protection for private photos
    - allows private galleries that are not rachable by search engines
    - allows you to specify keywords for search engines

All of the above can be done with SmugMug. I have a "pro" Flickr account included with my High Speed, but I would never want people to use that to see my photos.

My photos are on SmugMug, and I get many, many compliments.
