Could my rottie be younger than I think?
Just brought my pup home. The breeder told me tha he was 8 weeks. He only weighs 6 lbs. Very small... I am really concerned because his mother was not on site. Is it possible he is too young to be away from her? His vet appt. is next week. I think she will be able to tell me more. But what are some side effects if he was taken away too young?

Hi ochy, no, pup is not too young. Usually weaned at around three weeks, so you should be looking for a suitable puppy food for the youngster, unless the breeder had some suggestions. Male or female ? My Walker hound was five weeks when I brought her home and she is an 60 lbs lady now at l2 years.

Keep us posted on the pup's development with pics and stick around our board. Good luck.

    Thanks Tick!

Im using Innova large breed puppy food. Ive been soaking it with about a half tbsp of organic low sodium chicken broth just to soften some of it up for him. Right now I am actually intergrating the food with the food the breeder was using. It was Purina puppy chow. So right now we are at about 50/50. He seems to be OK with it. He is only eating about 1/2 cup 3 times a day. And not always finishing... He seems fine with that though.

    Thanks for the help!

Shaz, I didn't buy my dog at five weeks, she was rescued. Don't assume next time. Your reddie was unnecessary.

Sorry Tick, I only just found this thread.

You stated that puppies are weaned at 3 weeks, that's what I was disagreeing with. I understand that rescue cases are different but saying that to the OP might have been confusing to her as hers was from a breeder. I sounded like you were implying that it's OK for puppies to be sold earlier... I now know that was a misunderstanding.

I'm sorry for the reddie, I will make it up to you on another thread :)
