Much needed first aid kit for cars
I was noticing the "needed accessories" we should have on hand. Things like inexpensive meter reader, paper clip, etc. Sounds interesting to say the least. But my question is this... "elementary Dear Watson, please"- How to 'check codes?" This is a 1992 Dodge Ram Van that I haven't noticed dash lights on when starting. The only thing I notice is the oil gauge light. And the constant "maintenance light" that's always on.
Next question- When using the multimeter to check fuses- I've seen my husband use one, I thought he called it an ohm reader, anyway, I have the jist on how to use it, but when touching the black to ground, what are you actually touching the red to? When a fuse is IN, I didn't think there was anything exposed to touch when checking for voltage. Its all plastic, right? This is what I mean by -elementary- I need this in laimens terms. Sorry.

If you look closely at the fuse, you will see two metal test points. Your husband probably has a multimeter. Be sure to set it to DC volts (DCV), if you test for power through the fuses when the ignition switch is turned to ON.

Black to ground, red to the test points on the fuse. A good fuse has power at each test point.
