Bob do you have a manual? You should get a repair manual if at all possible. This is not a difficult job, I am picture this in my minds eye since I did it 3 weeks ago. Disconnect the battery and then the wries to the starter. The starter is held on the right side of most engines with 2-3 bolts fairly easy to see, the starter will drop down and out without removing the air intake cowling but removal of the cowling does give you a better view and shot. Common sockets, ratchet and extension is all that's needed.

    Hi,
A glance at the parts breakdown on Sears reveals that you have a Briggs opposed twin L-head engine. It is a bit more difficult than the previous answer says, but still easy enough. Always a safe thing is to start by disconnecting the negative battery cable. Then a 7/16" wrench will take the cable loose from the starter.
The bolts that hold the starter on are vertically oriented and physically covered by the flywheel. There are recesses in the bottom of the flywheel that when it is turned correctly will allow removal. a 1/2" wrench will loosen the two bolts. Put the bolts on the new starter before putting it into place to install, and take care not to pinch any wires.
    Peace,

I have a craftsman lawn tractor 917.275750 and I need to replace the starter. It looks like I need to take off the plastic engine cover to get to the top ot the starter. How do I get the cover off?
