Bottom teeth ache while running
Whenever I go running I’ve noticed that my bottom teeth have a terrible aching sensation. I’ve always had the problem, since I was about 4 years old anyway. I live in the desert so it’s hardly EVER cold where I live and I see a dentist regularly. I’ve noticed that it’s not only my teeth, my chest, throat and mouth have the same feeling it’s just unbearable for my bottom teeth. I’ve asked many different people, but nobody has an answer.. Anyone?

A lot of the times it's just the increased blood flow that cause the "ache". You said you go to the dentist regularly so I'd rule out anything abnormal. When I exercise, my top teeth hurt sometimes. Considering you said your chest and throat hurt as well, it sounds like the exertion from the exercise. You'd need to worried if they are unusually sensitive or bleed while brushing.

Have you ever mentioned this to your family doctor? You should probably rule out any possibility of any cardiac problems as well. Just a thought.

I have. Actually I have asthma, and running is what sent me into urgent care for it, so I was wondering if it could be asthma? Ive asked my doctors and they don't ever have any helpful information for me.

I have the same issue, and have had it all my life. I remember it as a young kid when swimming hard in a pool, and also when playing outdoors in winter. Now, it is much worse in colder weather. For me, this pain is concurrent with (or somehow connected to) a kind of exercise-induced bronchial pain that I feel down to about where my bronchial pipes divide in two, and the irritation and pain causes a lot of coughing and tickling constantly for days. It is an ache that is also often accompanied by an iron taste in my breath, but no obvious bleeding. If you've ever had a bad bronchial cold that had you barking like a seal when you cough, that's the kind of rawness and accompanying pain that comes with it. I often hear little kids coughing like that in the winter and it just hurts to hear.
I'm not sure if it's EIA, or just a bronchial inflammation, or what, but it does restrict my ability to excercize hard enough to develop my cardio-respiratory conditioning. I notice that albuteral inhalers like Proair do seem to suppress it if used before exercise, but not completely.
All I can add is that my father is a smoker, and a belligerent one. Back in the day, smoking with the family in the car with the windows up in the winter, etc. My mother and sister have full blown asthma, and I have whatever respiratory issue this is, but of course, he seems fine...

Hi, me too. No other problems, just the aching teeth while/after jogging. I do clench my teeth at night though and wear a splint to stop that but I don't clench my teeth while running. May be I hold some tension there though? I'd always figured it might be because of the increased blood flow but don't really understand why that would cause it. It would be great to get a real answer to this!

Matt,
Have you tried to wear your splint while running to see if it solves the aching? Just a thought.

Hi Flossie, I'm actually the "Tahn" part of the "Mattahn" :) I thought I should try that but really didn't think it would help and the splint is a little uncomfortable (I put it in just before I fall asleep) but I will give that a try today and let you know. Thanks very much for the nudge :) Than

Hi Than,
How about getting a sportsguard made that is softer and more flexible?

Hi Flossie, I just got back from my jog and although my lower teeth didn't ache quite as much while jogging with my splint in, I think that was because I couldn't feel the ache so much over the discomfort of the splint. I took my splint out straight after jogging and my lower teeth were aching but now I don't know if that was from the jogging or the splint? I think it may have helped a little though, as the "after jogging ache" doesn't seem as bad as yesterday and I did exactly the same circuit. But I prefer the ache to the discomfort of the splint. My dentist said the soft splint does more harm than good while you're sleeping (not sure why) and I need the hard one for that, but I might try a soft sportsguard while jogging and see how that goes... one day.

Than,
I don't recommend the sportsguard for sleeping, just jogging.
You might want to try taking some Advil before you run and see if that helps with the post jog discomfort.
