    In 1862 the soldiers were paid $13.00 a month. How much would that be in today's time.

    APPROXIMATION from available data:=

    Index 1862 = 1
    Index 1914 = 10 accurate
    Index 2000 = 170 accurate
    say Index 2009 = 200.

    SAY 13 times 200 = $ 2,600 a month.

    Hello tivy

    whatever it was, remember that the cost of living in 1862 was much lower than it is today.
    So you have to relate the 1862 $13.00 to the 1862 cost of living!

    Best way to find out the real value of that $ 13,00 would be to check the average house price around 1862, and relate that to the average house price in 2009.

    Success!
