    Sex and Pregnancy
    I am approximately 9 weeks pregnant. (This hasn't been 100% confirmed as I am waiting on my ultrasound, but this is what my doctor and I have discussed and assume is the approximate time. Basically I have been confirmed pregnant but not sure of the date).

    Here is my question:

    My morning sickness has disappeared, so far my pregnancy has been good and normal. No bleeding at all, nausea mostly and not really sick (as in throwing up), I have felt very tired and some mild gas cramping but other than that I feel good now. So I am wondering about sex. I am still in my first trimester and since I haven't had an ultrasound to check if everything else is normal - is it OK to have sex? Is there anything we should do differently or stay away from or should we wait until after the ultrasound? This is our first pregnancy so I am really worried about miscarrying, especially since I don't really know what to expect and haven't been through it before.

    First, when in doubt, please talk to your medical provider... he/she will be privy to any specific conditions that you might have that could skew the answer. There can be conditions/situations in which your provider will advise against sex. It is NOT as simple as saying "yes, go for it"...

    Short answer is that if you are considered low risk, you have the green light.

    So... please, please, please... talk to your med provider. They should look at your med history and assess your risk. For many, there is no issue whatsoever... and I think a little intimate time is great for a couple during this time, if "allowed" based on no conditions that warrant restraint.

    Thanks!! My doc is unfortunately on vacation for two weeks, so I guess I just wait until he comes back!

    Do you have a reason to believe that you would be high risk?

    Most normal pregnancies, do not restrict sex in the first trimester (which is great because your sex drive is actually in overdrive). You may be able to phone an on call nurse, just to double check her opinion.

    Is there a reason that you feel concerned?

    Well I am very glad I decided to wait. Unfortunately I had some spotting a few days later and was on bed rest for four days. Apparently there is a small lifting of the cord from the uterine wall. Thankfully everything seems to be OK now, baby is moving and has a strong heartbeat! Keep your fingers crossed for me! New due date: 09-09-09!
