Not correct
There are 11 Players per team on the field at any one time with substitutes that can come on and replace any of these. Replacements are limited depending on the competition. Different teams play different formations that go something like this
1. Goalkeeper 4.Defenders 4. Midfielders 2. Forwards = 4 4 2 (this is what they call this system and they leave off the GK as that is always the same)
Then you can have differing variations ie:
4 3 3
3 4 3
etc.
Some teams also play with diamond formations so it can look like this
1 3 1 3 1 1
Clear as mud really :)

To add to what friend4u said---- starting from back to front if u are playing the basic 4-4-2.. . // 1 goalkeeper, 4 defenders ( 2 center backs, a left back and a right back )-----4 midfielders ( 2 center mids, a left winger and a right winger)------2 forwards left and right.

Hi jayb,
I'll go along with the previous posts... there are 11 players in total for any football game.
However the tactics that are used vary tremendously, it depends a lot on what the manager/coach prefers, and of course what they think suits the team best.
Probably the most common tactic is the 4 4 2, which most teams like to play and are more successful when they do.
Tactics will also depend on the opposing team, your manager/coach will very often change tactics to match the opposition, if it is found that it is not working then a good manager is able to change tactics during the coarse of the game, hopefully winning the match.
On the other hand many matches are lost through tactical error, the manager/coaches have misread the opposition and sometimes are not confident enough to change things during a match, therefore a loss ocurrs.
There are 3 substitute players besides the original 11, these players remain on the bench until the manager/coach feels that a player on the field is not up to his best or perhaps they may have gained an injury,at this point the player will be exchanged for a substitute meaning at all times 11 players remain on the field of play.
If however a player has received a red card he is sent off the field of play... a substitute in this case cannot be used, the relevant team must finish the match with the remaining 10 men.
I hope this has helped you to understand a little of the game.
Respect to the late Sir Bobby Robson,a legend, pure gold.
Heavens 11 now have a wonderful manager.
