    J1 -tax
    Hi, I came to USA on J1 visa since Sept, 2008. What forms I have to fill up for tax return? I am married but my wife is still in INDIA( she has J2), so what extra form I have to fill up for her(somebody told me 8843 ,W7 etc) ?Thanks.

    You will file nonresident tax return form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ with Form 8843.

    What is J1 for; Student, intern, professor, researcher, teacher...

    Thank you vey much. But what should I fill in the status, because if I mentioned Married then I've mention my wife's SSN, which I don't have. My J1 is for research scholar,alien physician. Thanks for answering.

    On nonresident tax return, you are Other Married Alien. You do not need wife's SSN. Your income is not subject to SS tax, Medicare Tax and federal income tax for two years.

    If you are filing Form 8843 for your wife, then attach W7 (ITIN application).

    Hi.. Can I use Electronic subscription like H&R /turbotax etc for federal tax return for my 1st year tax return? I am in J1 visa. Thanks

    No, nonresident return can not be efiled.
    If your wife was not in the U.S. in 2008, then she does not file her Form 8843.
