I" attempting to install a chair rail up a stairway to a landing area. At the laindinf area the stairway turns left and continues to the second floor. How do I determin the proper angle of the rail up the stairs.

It you want to get the angel from top to bottom landings equal Use some tape at the bottom wall ( where the beginning of the steps start) and make a temp horizontal chair rail of tape. Keep it at your desired height (32") and tape to the steps. Do the same at the top of the landing. Now the line at the top of the landing is a fixed line. String a line from there to bottom of steps where the first temp chair rail is. Intersect those line until it equals in height off of all steps equally.Treat the second landing the same way.

You can adjust accordingly to match the handrail so its at the same height as the hand rail. That will give the chair rail symmetry to the railings

Basic chair rails are 32" Some say its in thirds on a wall. Of course a 9'+ wall would change things

Try laying the chairrail against the wall on the steps (it may not touch every step but will be close). At the top mark it with a verticle line(use a level). Measure the angel and use it for the bottom cut as well.

Hi home doc. The diff that fouls many people here is where you does the vertical off the step start. The landing below/floor is not taken into account for angle nor is past the last step. Its still a step the turns into/ is the floor.

I also forgot that the cut cannot be verticle, it must be half of the angle otherwise the two profiles don't match up. Sorry, folks!
