My son is 28 months old and he will not talk he understands everything I say to him and makes noises for the relivent animals and objects i.e train, cows, cats etc I've spoken to a health visitor and she said there's nothing to worry about he's got communication skills there. Can anyone suggest any things I can do to help him I already have flash cards, I sing nursery rhymes he goes to playgroup and sees other children. Its so frustrating!!

I have to apologize first because I laughed when I read this. You brought back memories for me that are now a family joke. My oldest son was healthy and happy. He was also big for his age so everyone expected a lot from him. We never "baby-talked" to him and even before he was a year old he understood everything that was said to him and could easily follow directions. As he got past his 2nd birthday and still wasn't talking other than an odd word here or there - I got worried. One day I got harsh. I refused to get him a drink until he said drink or water or whatever the word at the time was. He pointed and whined for quite a while and eventually he did speak. It sounds awful of me now but I was fully aware that he was merely choosing not to speak. Mostly it was probably our fault as parents. I anticipated most of his needs and he really had no need to speak. They will talk when they're ready. That particular son of mine is now 26 and hasn't shut up once. His IQ is over 160 so it also had nothing to do with intelligence or lack of it. He was just stubborn. Start asking questions that require a word answer - such as do you want water or juice? Do you want to slide or swing? If he does answer in a word - don't jump up and down and scream "finally" - just go on as if nothing monumental happened. He will talk.

No he's the only child but he does interact with other children at the playgroup he goes to.
