Being sued for credit card debt
Hello all. I recenelt received this letter from a credit card company stating that my account is being placed for litigation, something along those lines, and called to find out that I'm being sued for what I owe on the card, just a little over 1K, and its been about 1yr. So will they really sue me for that? I called to hopefully make arrangements to get it paid off and the guy I spoke with was just so rude and disrespectful, these guys really don't care unless they know they're getting they're money. Anyhoo, I tried doing what I could and he made it seem as though if I don't get him the money right there and then before he hangs up, the paper works going to be filled and processed and all. So needless to say I got a little fearful, finally in the end he decides that he's going to give me until the end of the day to come up with something. So my question is, is how long does it take for something like that to be prcoessed and for me to be summoned to go to court or w/e, or was he doing that just to scare me to get the money right there and then. Needless to say I am taking this very seriously, I'm only 21 and in college and pretty much struggling as it is right now.

"Usually" the collection agency bounces the account back as uncollectible and recommends that a lawsuit be filed. Then it depends on the workload of the law firm handling the suit. I've seen papers served in 10 days. The creditor "usually" then has between 10 and 30 days to respond, the hearing is held, a decision is rendered.

So given my current situation, being unemployed and in school, they're still going to get a case against me? Needless to say, that I couldn't afford a lawyer, so I'm not really sure what to do here. The guy I spoke with made it seem as though there's no possible way to compromise and work something out, and the only way for them not to go forward with it is to pay the 1k in full today.

If you owe the money and haven't paid it, yes, they have a case against you. You are legally responsible for your bills no matter what the circumstances. If you don't pay this who do you think will?
Worse comes to worse, they get a Judgment and have between 7 and 20 years to collect on it. At some point in the future you will find employment and they will move to collect their money.

So say that they decided to move forward to get a case against me and I come up with the money before they get a trial, could I just still pay the amount owed or will they not care and just try to go forward with the case anyway

If you pay them in an amount to which they agree, it's over. That doesn't necessarily mean that you need to pay them the full balance. They may very well take 50% or so now rather than wait for years and years.
