My dog is 12 years old and has been house trained for 12 years! All the sudden she is pooping in the house at night. What is wrong?

This could be a medical problem. Have you taken her to the vet?

I haven't yet. I thought I would see if there were any other suggestions prior to biting off a vet bill...

It could just be age, but it's always best to rule out medical concerns.

Have you changed her diet recently? Is she on medication? Have you brought a new pet into the home or a baby?

Dogs sometimes don't handle change well.

I lived with many beautiful senior canines, sadly as they age so do their bodily functions, my experience with this type of scenario, especially pooping normal stools (if they are loose could be a different explanation) at this age in the home where they normally were so fastidious, has not been good news, generally pressure in this area has been noted in the form of a growth, tumour or swelling that is increasing or growing, however Altenweg could also be very right if you have made any changes to the normality of the dogs routine, but I have found this more in younger dogs not seniors. An ultra sound, or in many cases a simpy x-ray should determine the cause.

Good luck it is difficult to age graceully, just my experiences with this particular symptom.
