    The basic equation for a parabola is of the form:



    Where (a,b) is the location of the vertex and p is the distance from the vertex to the focus (in one direction) and also to the directrix (in the other direction). So, just rearrange your homework problems into the above form, and you will have the values of a, b, and p, which gives you your answers.
