Filing taxes why leaving to Germany
    Hi,

I left the US in September 08 for an assignment that we last till 2009. While doing it, I move my complete family in Germany where I currently work.
The main dilemma that I have is that my income since September is not mentioned in my W2 because I am paid directly in germany where I am paying taxes as well.
I am a resident allien (green card owner) and I am wondering how I should file my taxes. Should I file it first in germany? Please let me know

As a green card holder you are taxed in the US on your worldwide income regardless of where in the world you live or work.

You must declare on your US tax the money you made in Germany.

So, if you are subject to tax in Germany you will have your tax preparer fill out a Form 1116 (foreign tax credit) and deduct that result from your US tax to avoid double taxation.

Moreover, don't forget to deduct your moving expenses from income.

On your 2008 tax return, you will report Germany income received in 2008 and incomes taxes you paid in Germany in 2008. It may be estimated tax payment or tax withheld.

You will use Form 3903 to claim the moving expenses on your U.S. return.
