I need a concrete base for a shed. My boyfriend says he can do it for me and a friend has a cement mixer we can borrow but we don't know how to work out the quantities of the materials we will need. Can anyone help?

If you give them the measurements at the store where you buy the cement, they will work it out for y ou. Just take measurements which anyone would need to determine quantity of readymix cement and other material. A frame will have to be built. Depending where you are, it better be warm enough for the cement to set and harden. A cement mixer is handy, I had to do it in a wheelbarrel by hand! I won't be doing that again anytime soon ! Don't buy the pre mix concrete at the big box stores if you can help it.

Get the materials at the masonry supply store.
A yard of concrete is 46,656 cubic inches 0r a cubic yard of concrete at 4 thick places 80 square feet.

How big is the pad?

If you want to mix it in the concrete mixer get this at the masonry supply house

Portland cement 90 lb
Hydrated lime 50lb
Concrete sand
2b clean stone or rice mix stone.

The mix is this.

1 bag Portland
1/2 bag lime
24 full shovels of concrete sand
20 shovels full shovels of stone.

For a yard of mixing it above is about $75.00 for a yard to place.

Hi, 21boat, I do a lot of work around my house myself. I make birdbaths, etc. it works in with my stained glass for outside gardens, small ones though as you can imagine.

I will keep your recipe for my own needs. Thanks for picking up on this. Your information is wonderful !

Although for some of my small needs, the premixed works well and so does the wheelbarrel ! You wouldn't want to know, being the expert you are, what I have made with premix. You would probably shudder.
