Hmmm... while the usual suspect might be that you have a 2.0 device plugged into a 1.0 USB port, you would be notified by XP. One little culprit that gets people on occasion is drive assignment. Go to your computer management (right click on my computer and select manage), then choose disk management and see if the drive is listed there with no drive letter assigned or with a duplicate drive letter assigned. If the drive is dictating a drive letter that the system is already using, it may just not show up. You can right click on the USB Drive (if you see it) and assign an unused drive letter.
