    Energy hydrolics log splitter
Ihave a energy hydrolics 20 ton log spilter about 20 years old.

The engine is a 5 hp tecumseh engine that will not run.

It will run for a bit then die. It ran fine before until I replaced the carb.

    A couple of questions:

    1) Is the gas tank metal?
    2) Did you set the high and low speed mixture screws separately?
    3) If it has a primer bulb, is that system intact?

Just curious, if it ran fine why did you replace the carb? Still have the old carb? See where I am going with this?

Mower man plastic gas tanks cause more moisture in the gas then metal. I didn't believe that until I had a plastic tank in a shed. It heated up more and cooled to cause more condensation check gas. Just wanted to add that little diddy.

ballengerb1 and KeepItSimpleStupid is one a good track here.

Just popped in for the plastic gas tank comment.

When I moved, it hit something and broke the carb, where it attaches,so I replaced it.

Did you install a brand new OEM carb with new gaskets? Double check you throttle and choke linkage for binding and proper travel.

Take apart and clean the carb then.

That should be a big light bulb.

It really does sound like a fuel issue. Bad fuel. Not enough octane. Not using the mid-grade. Not using a stabilizer like stabil-when stored. Water in the gas tank. Gas cap vent plugged (operate without the cap on to test). Bad fuel filter.
Carb not adjusted right. Low and high speed not adjuated separately. Dirty air cleaner. Rust or other debris in the fuel system.

I ended up changing the engine,I needed to use it an I put a 6 hp tecumseh power sport(go kart engine) with a throttle control.

I will mess with the old motor some other day.

The year of the machine is 1980 and it was $799.00 back then.

Thanks for the help.- I will post back when I get it to run.
