I have a 1920's old home and am renting. I have 2 small children and found the 'Loud Banging Noise from Pipes' to be a really helpful thread. However, they did put an automatic feed finally on. I moved in November 1st and they never told me about the water level. We were cold from that point on and notice the water was cold when taking a bath. They kept saying wiggle and jiggle the thermostat electronic dial. 2 weeks ago it was 43 for 2 days and it has consistently been 59 in the house or less. They finally replaced the dial and had someone come in and say there is a water glass tube downstairs that is empty and you need to fill this weekly -- this is why you haven't had heat to kick on the furnace. I was pissed - oversight on the landlord... I'll say!

Now, the thermostat dial was replaced with a simple one and the guy put an automatic feed on the furnace. They never said if it needs a filter change?

My problem is this, the downstairs radiator shoots up water like a geyser onto the wall (almost to the ceiling) and is very dangerous. The other radiators (some do leak) do not act like this - WHY>? What can, should I be doing?

You can do nothing. A professional is needed to look at that system and fix it properly. The radiator is NOT supposed to shoot any water and the other radiators are not supposed to leak. From your description your system could be hot water or steam but I am inclined to think it is hot water. As a tenant and unskilled person in these things you are better off getting the proper help to do the repair. The landloard is probably being cheap and hiring people who do not know what they are doing.

Thank you! This is a natural gas energy source and it feeds from a very old furnace, they had this handyman put the automatic feed and hook up new pipes to it. Yes, they are cheap and I have just finished reading the Landlord/Tenant Handbook for the State. Unfortunately for them, this is the least of their problems, as they painted over mold in the bathroom which I had an quality air remediation company come and measure and it's really high... and they painted over it. It is really unbelieveable... I am going to have a "real" HVAC person come. Thank you for your help... a lot to thinkabout.

Sorry to hear that you are dealing with this. Yes you nees someone who knows how to ake care of the boiler.Next I would not pay him his rent till your warm.when he ask you where his check is tell him the ink in the pen is frozzen and would not work.it mit work when it warm.
For the temp talk to your housing they make sure that landlords keep the heat working.For the mold call your heath department.Just keep in mind that next time you renew your lease the rent will go up to get you out.but now the house is safe and warm.

Frozen ink... that's a good one! Also, when you lick the stamp, it freezes before you can stick it to the envelope... which also freezes when you try to close it!:D

Geez, I was remarking on the humor in someone else's post, not the misfortune of your situation. While I would rather be somewhere warmer, Hell was not on my list of choice destinations.:confused:
