Rite Temp Thermostat and Carrier Comfort 80
    Hi!
Today I felt cold in the house and went over to the Rite Temp Digital Thermostat we have, and when I touched it, I shocked it and the temperature went from 67 to 74. It has not worked since. We changed out the thermostat and put in a different model for Rite Temp and it still will not worked. We are not sure what to look at next. My husband did look at the heat pump up in the attic, but was not sure where to start. Any ideas??

    Thank you,
    Karen

It is possible you blew the small fuse on the circuit board in the inside unit if it has a circuit board. Next you need to check if the transformer in the inside unit is putting out 24 volts for the control circuit. (you will need a electric meter and know how to use it to check that). You could also have a short circuit in the low voltage wiring. Also check to make sure your circuit breakers are on in the main panel. Becareful when testing since electric power will be on.

I have never heard of shocking a thermostat so this is a new one on me and I have been in this trade for a long time.

Most equipment these days is well protected from Electrostatic Discharges (ESD), or shocks. My guess is you have a short somewhere that happen coincidentally.

You DH will have to just run down the short, and maybe have to replace a fuse or transformer in the process.
