I am a new homeowner and learning things on my own. I have an old gas stove and am in the market for a new electric stove. How can I tell if I have a 220 outlet behing my gas stove. I've been told that some homes are prepped for both. There is a three pronged pulg from the current gas stove to the outlet. Does that mean a 220 line or not? Thanks.

If this outlet appears to be the same as other outlets in the house, it is probably 110V used for the gas range lights & indicators. 220V outlets are intentionally shaped differently and are typically much larger because of the heavier wire required to carry the larger amount of current. To be sure, check what is available at this outlet with a voltmeter.
The power plug on an electric stove is about the size of your fist. If this outlet is not that size, prepare to have a new line installed.

Jan356- go to your main electrical panel and it should be labeled on the door as (range <elect stove> and also go to the number it is at and (see if it is a double breaker),which will be a 220 volt breaker :: or take a volt-ohm meter set to at least 250 volts < put the probs from the meter into the holes in the plug in (2) holes will give you 220 volts :note if you happen to get one hole and meter reads 120volts you got a hot and the nutral (ground) if i knew what the plug in part was like i could tell you if its 220 or not by the way <i don't know what your local is but in new homes there is only one plug in required by code behind where a cook stove goes ;; i built and wired to many:: you can get a electrician to come and check it for you <or if you had the home pre inspected before buying it should be noted on his formif you do the checking <please be carefil 220 volts does not have no for giveness <stay safe :: good luck and god bless:: f.b.e.
