I have a Hampton Bay remote control which was working great two days ago. I went away and came home today and it's not working. The red light on the remote is blinking fast but the fan and light won't go on, even with the pulls

Any idea what would cause this fast blinking light in the remote?

My first guess would be that there's a key stuck on your remote control. Often, when that happens, the device you are trying to control will ignore the other controls. To test this, take the batteries out of your remote, and see if the pull cords work. If it works, see if you can un-stick the key, take it to someone who knows about fixing remotes, get a new one, or make due with the pull-cords.

The next thing I'd check is to make sure you have power going to the fan and light. Check your fuses or circuit breakers, to make sure you have power going to the fan and light. While you are checking them, remember that some fuses blow in ways that are not always obvious (so change it or remove it and test it), and by turning the circuit breaker off and on, not only will you reset it, you will have turned off the master power for the fan, and that should reset the fan's controller. Try the pull-cords again, and see if you have success. If not, you have a more serious problem, and likely need to check into a new fan.

I agree.

Since your fan has pulls, you can always remove the remote receiver and wire the fan without it.

Thanks for responses.

The light and fan do not turn on with the pulls and since all other electrical units on that circuit breaker are working, we are assuming its not that.

We are getting a new battery for the remote, thinking that the remote sent a signal to turn everything off

It is normal if the remote controller on the fan and light say off, the pulls won't work?

There were two reasons I suggested cycling the breaker. The first was to be sure that it was reset and supplying power. The second (and more important one) was to force the controller in the fan to "reboot", clearing any bad commands the remote might have sent, and glitches from power surges. (That's also why I asked you to remove the batteries from the remote, so it couldn't interfere with the fan's control system.)

First and foremost, Hampton Bay ceiling fans have a lifetime warranty. Since they are the house brand of Home Depot, and sold only in Home Depot stores and websites, Home Depot honors the Hampton Bay warranty. So if your fan breaks or fails, often times the easiest solution is to return the fan to Home Depot for a full replacement under warranty.

But if you want to try changing one more part, this likely will do the trick, Hampton Bay Remote Control

If it doesn't work, you can always take it back, and take the whole fan back for replacement under warranty.

I'm not sure why the pull chains were not working. I guess the remote in the fan were blocking the power somehow.

However, I wanted to let you know that replacing the battery did the trick. Everything is working great now, just like before.

This was an interesting experience because before, when the remote wasn't working, the pull chains worked fine, turning the light and fan on and off, so I didn't think it was only a battery problem, but it was.
