    Calculating Depreciation
    Swanson Service Center purchased a copier on January 1, 2009, for $18,000 and paid an additional $500 for delivery charges. The copier was estimated to have a life of four years or 800,000 copies. Salvage was estimated at $2500. The copier produced 230,000 copies in 2009 and 250,000 copies in 2010.

    Compute the amount of depreciation expense for the copier for calendar years 2009 and 2010, using these methods:

    a. straight-line
    b. units-of-production
    c. double declining balance
    d. MACRS, assuming that the copier is classified as five-year property.

    First you need to compute the cost of the copier. Add the cost and the delivery cost to get your copier cost. You have the rest of the information you need to calculate depreciation under each method.

    Use your accounting text book to figure out to compute your depreciation for each method.

    In addition, pay attention to the salvage value for using straight line and number of activities method, you need to subtract it from the original cost while with the double declining, you don't.

    These things need to be taken into account:-

    1) The value of the net asset on which
    depreciation is going to be calculated.

    a. straight-line
    Four years = 25% per annum of net asset value.

    b. units-of-production
    2009 = 230,000/800,000 of net asset value
    2010 = 250,000/800,000 of net asset value

    c. double declining balance

    twice ( 25%) of the balance of the net asset value.

    d. MACRS, assuming that the copier is classified as five-year property.

    Alter the 25% to 20%.
