My Mom has 2 female dogs. One is a 4 year old chihuahua and the other is a 1 year old dachshund. She has had both since they were 8 weeks old. Basically these dogs have been together for a year now. Both are spayed. Out of nowhere, they have started viciously fighting! The dachshund tries to mount the chihuahua and she does not want any part of that and a HUGE fight breaks out. Currently my Mom is trying to keep them separated, but this can't be forever. Does any have any suggestions on what we can do? Is this just a phase? Someone at the vets office said to just let them fight, but they fight for blood!

The basic reason they are fighting is become mom and you are not a pack leader and this causes instability in the dogs. The have no rules or guidance. A pack leader dog does not put up with this nor does a stable pack of dogs. They are kids not knowing the boundary's set by mom the pack leader. Mom needs to be calm and assertive and powerful to achieve this. Don't yell at the dogs this heightens the already excited state there already in. To start the pack leader is to block the most excited dog from the other one and claim that space between the two dogs. This already starts the pack leader position. Mom is claiming her pack leader space. When walking them together on a leash try one at a time. MOM has to go out the door first. If dog goes out first the mom lost the pack leader position. The dog needs to be calm and loose leash standing at the door and then mom was out first and dog follows. Sam as in the walk. Dog beside or in back of mom. Do this with both dogs separately. Then once that goes well walk them both the same way. This will now be a complete pack as mom the pack leader. Remember a pack leader doesn't talk or say words to get the pack to follow. A short ssshh is all that's needed. If the dog is really bad put it firmly down on it side and use the this of the fingers to mimic a dog bite behind the ear on side of throat. Be very calm while doing this as the dog relaxes loosen the finger bite effect. This same thing can be used in a quick gab in the same area as they try to fight and as you block and be in the middle. A pack leader or another dog in the pack Will NOT tolerate a nervous unstable dog. Since it can't talk it just puts another dig down as a way to say this behavior is not accepted in this pack. When you walk the dog properly the leash tension is very important a relaxed leash on the walk and a jerk to the side to keep him focused.
