    Does the "Toning" on a U.S. Silver Coin Lessen It's Collectible Monetary Value?
    I'm wondering if the "toning" or maybe so-called "aging" of a U.S. collectible silver coin will decrease its possible monetary value to collectors.

    Thanks!

    CLOUGH - AS per AN IF a coin is cleaned by any one except a profesinal the coin can loose quite a bit of its value if it had been left as it was ; now they will clean a coin if you want them to :: BUT if a coin has been cleaned just by anyone they say they won't even grade the coin, IF IT is tarnnished or what ever ,best left alone ; Even a collector that is exper, can tell and he will tell you that the vsalue is a lot less; HOPE this helps you out clough, ;BUT in my papers I can get out from the ANA, I could give you word for word what it says,if you need it for someone; Have a grteat day and GOD BLESS : F.B.E.

    Hi, F.B.E.

    I knew about the cleaning thing. Made the mistake of cleaning one coin, out of a year set of silver dollars, a long time ago... Wish that I hadn't done that!

    So, if a coin is tarnished at all, that could significantly decrease it's monetary value to a collector? The beauty of some silver coins in particular, would actually appear to be enhanced because of certain kinds of ways of toning.

    Thanks!

    CLOUGH - yes they would look better with a tone on them <BUT AS THE BOOKS SAY ( QUOTE) THEY are more vaulable being with the tarnish on them then to have had someone clean them the wrong way:: When a coin is graded ,they scan them threw a speical microscope and if the coin has been cleaned with the wrong stuff ( LETS SAY) they will be able to see this and if the coin ( SAY ) would have been valued at ( $ 2,000.00BUT then tjhey see that its beren cleaned and say that the VALUE IS ( $ 1, 200.. 00) THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE :: They say the coin is more vaulable the way it is then if it were cleaned :: HAVE A GREAT DAY TOMORROW,&
    GOD BLESS YOU :: F.B.E.
