    Oversized evaporator air conditioning coil
    Hi,

I have a used furnace with a 5 ton evaporative coil on it. I want to connect it to a 3.5 ton compressor. Any potential problems? Seems like it would be slightly more efficient.

There are many potential problems but they can be overcome with the proper parts and a professional service person in the HVAC trade.

The unit will need a expansion valve installed on the coil. The TXV should be externally equalized and adjustable. It would also be good if it has a built in pressure balance circuit so additional start components will be kept to a minimum.

Once in operation then the TXV will need to be adjusted to the correct super heat setting. The pressures will be a bit different that a matched evaporator but the larger coil surface of the bigger coil will allow more moisture removal and slower blower motor speed if desired.
