    Speed issue on Windows XP
Hi I have a toshiba laptop with Windows XP. I run the speedsteam modem through a wirelesss router. My speed is showing as only 54 Mbps but bigpond state it is only receiving a fraction of the speed it should be, that something is blocking my computer from receiving the full speed of 1500 kb (I think it's kb or something else) /This is running slower than the speed bigpond would reduce my speed to if I exceeded my month allowance of 12gb which I never do, I'm running at about 10.. They said they would reduce me to 64 mbps but as you can see I only run at max of 54 mbps

They think it could be an issue with the hard drive. My CPU usage on the taskmgr shows at 100% most of the time, especially when I look at real estate pages (which I do most of the time) and the pictures. My processor is 1393 Mhz. My total memory shows as 1024 mb and available memory is 441 mb. My total vertual memory is 2GB and available vertual memory is 1.96 gb. I have 1 gb ram.

Could it be an issue with the router also, I've read some stuff on forums that perhaps the router is blocking the speed coming through also?

Any assistance you can offer a novice lady like me would be great.
    Many thanks

The CPU usage should never be anywhere 100%. A 1.3 gig processor should be twiddling its thumbs most of the time. This happened to me after a relative used my PC. It seems spyware & vurses had been allowed into the computer. A firewall/virus/spyware software cured this ill. Also look for a hidden reset switch on the back of the modem & router. My cable modem had one & depressing it brought the modem back up to full speed. Apparently, that modem slowdown was also initiated by the same incident.

If you hook another computer to the router, is it faster? Do you have another modem you can use?
