There are different ways to do that. Police use computer records that show arrests and other notes but don't say whether you were arrested. If you ask for copies of actual arrest reports there is likely to be a fee, but you should be able to view the reports without a fee. Same with the police file under your name. A lot of court systems now have databases where you can enter any name and view court records throughout the state, and often have computers available for public use at the clerk of court office. If you have a juvenile file, you may be able to get a complete copy of juvenile cases without paying any fee. In my state, if you go to the website for the state supreme court, you can link to the electronic statewide district court records, which go back to the mid-90's. For older records, you might have to go to the courts to find out about records--but you can do all this through police records, court clerks, etc. and find out how to proceed before you have to pay any money.

This works if any records would be in the state you live in.

You could also check with your local DA or state's attorney's office and ask them what you can do to find your criminal record.

Check with your local Police Department. There is a nominal fee and you will know the info is up to date. What you will see is what anyone else running a check on you will see.

Now, if someone is going to run a full background check, that's different, everything - arrests and so forth - will appear.

In Beautiful Ohio all one has to do is present themselves at either the local Sheriff's Office or local City Police Department and show picture ID and request their criminal record for free.
