I think it depends on the style and cut of the dress. For example, you don't want to wear a sexy, strappy, LBD to a Bar Mitzvah or a baby shower! But a cute black sundress with a wide pink sash would work just fine!

I'm not sure the "Dont' wear a LBD to a wedding" is across the board either. Like above, with a sash or a hat I think it would be OK. Black is very formal - it is slimming too!

In my opinion, it is the nature of the event that should determine the dress. :)

High school. Apple picking. Horseback riding.

You really don't have to avoid black at weddings. I don't know where you heard that "rule", but just consider how many weddings are black tie. Men in black tuxes, lots of women in elegant black dresses...

Can you post a pic of it?

A little black dress can mean simple and classy as much as it can mean slinky and sexy. It all comes down to the cut of the dress.

It is not true that you can't wear it to a wedding. Here in NYC the majority of women wear LBDs to weddings.

Like already said, it matters more the style of the dress.

Unless this is a cultural thing, wearing black at a wedding is classic... depending on the style of dress. I can't think of an occasion where black would not be acceptable, as long as the "style" is appropriate for the occasion.

Places where it's not appropriate? Eg: black leather dress at church, LBD with fishnets at a funeral, very low cut LBD at a school function, or a micro mini LBD at an office party!. etc.

Otherwise, a LBD is a staple that can be dressed up or down!

You can most definitely wear your LBD to a wedding, in fact my best friend had us (the bridesmaid and maid of honor) wear black dresses, and she had black accents all over, so her colors were black and white, and it was very classy. I believe that you can make a black dress fitting for most occasions just by accessorizing.

The LBD is a great addition to anyone's wardrobe personally I think you can wear one just about anywhere (within reason) It's great because any type and shape of woman suit it, its what your wear when you've got nothing else to wear.
When Chanel designed it it was originally called the "ford" dress like the car because Henry Ford once said you can have it in any colour as long as it was black.
It's a pioneer in woman's fashion that's survived more than 80 years so I think you can wear it just about any occasion its how you wear it that is the main thing.
