Together?? Or through a router.
A Router can be wired too!
I guess what I was asking was will you be using ANYTHING other then the two PC's ie: router, switch etc...

Dear Sir.
Thanks a lot for spending your valuabletime for me.
Please not that no I am not using any thing except the cable, generally this cable use for telephone lines. And the same was working earlier between two lan card.
Even when I switch on both Pc, the task bar ( on righthand side corner ) on winXP PC shows that xyz conncetion is connected with 1.0 gbps speed. When I double clik on that it shows that connection is on and data from sent side is being transferred but on received side nothing! It remains as O only.
So I think there is a problem in setup of "internet protocol (TCP / IP)" setting

OK so it's a direct connect (t's not the same cable you would use for a telephone. RJ-11 Adapter and Rj-45 Ethernet adapter)
Anyway to me it sounds like there is a setup problem on the receiving PC or in your protocol design. I don't know too much about directly connecting PC's for a network.
I figured you would be using a router and/or switch or something.
Maybe some of the IT experts will help you. Look for one and send a private message!

As ITStudent2006 has already stated, a 4-wire cable with RJ-11 connectors is not the proper cable for this.
You will need a Cat 5e or Cat 6 (preferrable) with RJ-45 connections at each end. This cable must be configured as a Crossover cable and NOT a straight passthrough for a direct connection between computers.
One end will be a T568A and the other end will be a T568B connection.
If you look at the top of the clear connector, you should see eight, gold connection pins. The pair of wires to the far left should be a green pair at one end of the cable and an orange pair at the other end. If this is not the case, you will need to obtain the correct cable.
The best way is to connect each of your computers is to a small hub or switch. You can easily purchase a small 4-port or 8-port gigabit switch for around $25-$30. Connect both of your computers to this switch with straight pass-through cables.

I'd go one step further than chuckhole. For ease of setup, I would get a small router instead. The you can set the 2 computers's TCP/IP settings to "Obtain Automatically" and they will set themselves up, using the router.
If you still want to user the cable between two network cards, do as chuckhole suggests. A crossover cable will *generally* have on one end (orange(x2), green/blue(x2)/green, brown(x2)), and on the other end (green(x2),orange/blue(x2)/orange, brown(x2)). It will have a connector on the end with 8 little wires in it, instead of the 2 4 or 6 that come in a phone cable.
If you're using this, one of the PCs has to either be set up with Internet Connection sharing, or you have to assign the IP addresses manually. If you're assigning them manually in the TCP/IP configuration, it's pretty safe to go with 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 for the addresses. If you use this, you'll want the subnet mask to be 255.255.255.0. If you're not sharing an internet connection, you can leave the Default Gateway and DNS server settings blank.

If you're doing this for experimental purposes I would suggest downloading packettracer. It's a program that provides the user to build as big of a network as he/she wants but you are responsible for everything, all cable requirements must be chosen and correct(like the previous posters said device to device must be crossover) you must assign addresses, must choose the right ports to plug in, the correct routers, correct switches etc... after your network is built it allows packets to be sent simulating data transfer and you can even go into a PC's MS-DOS and trace your packe routes. It's a very helpful program that I used in my Cisco class to build a network containg 244 Computers on a 4 story building.
I am not advising you stop doing this experiment with the two compters (IF it is an experiment) only because hands on learning in the IT world is by far the greatest knowledge bank.
Good Luck
