    Claiming my elderly parent ?
I was wondering if I could claim my elderly mother who is disabled and on SSI disability ?

I know I can claim her as a dependent , but somebody told me I could claim her as a qualifing relative and get a credit like the child credit . I pay more than half of her expenses and I am her primary care giver . She lives with me and I help her daily with basic needs such as walking and dressing , etc...

Can anybody shed any light on how I could claim her , other than just a dependent ?

    Thanks

Child credits are for qualifying children.

If you are spending more than what your mother gets from SS disability and her other income, then you can claim her. No other benefits.

If she requires round-the-clock care and you pay someone to watch her while you are at work, then you CAN claim those costs under the "Child Care Credit" Form 2441).

However, expect to get challenged on that credit when you file. You will have to prove that she requires that level of care. A doctor's signed statement should be sufficient.
