    Work in Different STates in 2008 Financial Year- on H1 in USA
    Hi,

    I was working in Memphis, TN for 6 months and was in India for 2.5 Months. My new assignment is in New York city and staying in New Jersey. AM I supposed to pay taxes for both New Jersey and New York city.

    You have incomes that should be reported to three states.

    Tennessee has NO income tax, so you would report the NY income to NJ (because that is where you are living) and NY (because that is where you are working).

    You can claim a credit for the NY taxes paid on your New Jersey tax return, which will completely offset any NJ taxes owed (because NY state income tax rates are a LOT higher than NJ tax rates).
