Type 1 diabetes reduces the normal life span by an average of five to eight years. In general, however, survival rates are improving in all ethnic groups and both genders. Longer survival rates are probably due to improvements in monitoring and closer control of blood glucose. There are two important approaches to preventing complications from type 1 diabetes:

* Intensive control of blood glucose and keeping glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels below 7.0. This is proving to prevent complication due to vascular (blood vessel) abnormalities and nerve damage (neuropathy) that can cause major damage to organs, including the eyes, kidneys, and heart.
* Managing risk factors for heart disease. Evidence is merging that control of blood glucose also helps the heart, but its benefits most likely accrue over time. It is very important that people with diabetes control blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other factors associated with heart disease.

No one can predict what the average lifespan will be for Type 1 diabetics.

tickle is absolutely right. Everyone is different with regards to life span and type 1 diabetes. It has everything to do with life style and heredity. The same in quote-unquote "normal" people. I have been a diabetic type-1 onset for over 30 years. I am just now at age 47 experiencing some diabetic retinopathy (Blindness from hemorraging blood vessels to the retina) in my left eye. I do suggest you ask your doctor about hypertension medication whether you have highblood pressure or not. Medications such as verapamil or Norvasc can help profusion (blood flow) to the kidneys. To protect your eyes try not to strain on heavy wieghts during workouts. This increases the pressure in your eyes and in time may speed up hemorraging. Remember. Just because one diabetic experiences a certain thing does not mean you will. The best advice I can give for diet is the small carb/fat/calorie counting book called "The Calorie King". Being diagnosed with Diabetes l or 2 is not necessarily a death sentence any longer. With diet and meds (and yes the occasional chocolate) you can live a normal lifespan. Diet is the key word, controlling that along with meds, losing weight if you are over, is tantamount to staying health with diabetes.
